On 01 July 2016, five militants took hostages and opened fire on the Holey Artisan Bakery, an upscale restaurant in Gulshan, an affluent area with many embassies in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The assailants entered the bakery and took several hostages both foreigners and locals. In immediate response, the security agencies tried to regain control of the restaurant while two police officers were shot dead by the attackers. Authorities say local militants, not Islamic State,carried out the twelve hour siege which ended as commandos stormed the area. 29 people were killed in that incident. The attackers killed 20 hostages; among them were 18 foreigners along with 2 Bangladeshis and 2 police officers were in the toll. 5 gunmen and one bakery staff were died on July 02 following an operation of the commandos. Another bakery staff, who survived the attack was died in the hospital.
