Faiham Ebna Sharif

Photographer and researcher

Faiham Ebna Sharif is an independent photographer and researcher. He is based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Faiham finished his bachelor’s and master’s in International Relations at the University of Dhaka. He holds another master’s in Cultural Anthropology from Uppsala University. Besides, Faiham has a diploma in Photography from Counter Foto – A Center for Visual Arts, where he is a faculty member now.

Earlier, Faiham worked for local and international media outlets. He was a newsroom editor cum presenter in a national news and current affairs television channel, Somoy Television. He also worked as a stringer multimedia journalist for bdnews24.com. Before coming into news media, Faiham worked with national and international fiction and non-fiction projects. He was a crew member of the national award-winning film Guerrilla, and Je Shohor Chorabali, a film based on true stories of underprivileged children.

Besides the long-term project, Faiham also takes consultancy and stringer assignments from nonprofits and media organizations. BRAC, IPAS, Terre des Hommes, AFP, Agence Presse Quebec, Monocle, and Getty Images are just a few names on his client list. Faiham is a fellow of the Swedish Institute, Harvard University, and the Dutch Visitors Programme on Human Rights. He received grant support from the Magnum Foundation, Documentary Project Fund, Prince Claus Fund, Asia-Europe Foundation, Samdani Foundation, Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography, and Forum for South Asian Studies at Uppsala University.

He is doing a long-term documentary photography research project on tea. He has participated in Addis Foto Fest, Photoville, Polyphony Photo Festival, and Dhaka Art Summit, besides solo and group exhibitions. Faiham’s writing and photographs have been featured in books titled – Documenting People on the Margins, Nomades, A Transformative Journey in Preventing Gender-Based Violence, Foyez Ullah: Dhaka’s Tropical Expressive Architecture. His self-initiated projects are Cha Chakra: Tea Tales of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Film Industry: Fantasy is More Filmic Than Fictional, Journey by A Bus, Rohingya Refugees, and Climate Chronicles.
